New Haus Press is a letterpress art studio focusing on large scale pieces by artist Chris Chandler in Portland, Oregon. Through the years his love, talent, knowledge and collection of this vintage craft has grown. Chris hired me to shoot him in two studios as he gave up his original studio and then settled in another, asking me to create portraits and images of him at work to use for marketing, publicity and editorial purposes, as a number of magazines and galleries were increasingly interested in his career and fine art prints. My background in documentary work informed my storytelling, editorial type approach which I wanted to look stark, bold, timeless and graphic, just as Chris’s prints are. Shooting in a high contrast way, either with flash or extreme bursts of daylight, sun and shadow, over the course of a few days allowed us to relax into the process together, and make him a significant archive of images to mark this period of his art and business.
