B I O :
Airyka Rockefeller was born in 1979 and grew up on an island near Seattle, Washington. She graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in 2001 with a Bachelor's degree in cultural studies and photography and received her MFA in 2005 from California College of the Arts.
Rockefeller is a previous recipient of a Photographic Center Northwest grant, a prior artist in residence at Milkwood International in the Czech Republic and at The Barli Institute For Rural Women in India. Her work has shown nationally at Silverman Gallery, Jack Fisher Gallery, Sara Tecchia Roma Gallery, Laguna Art Museum and The Outpost For Contemporary Art.
Rockefeller's photographs explore paradigms between the symbolic and factual value of found objects, archives and places. Recent projects turn attention to repurposed landscapes, worldly metamorphosis and presence in one's environment, whether through the lens of gesture, architecture, play or ceremony. Her ongoing series of self-portraits, Between Or Before, was recently included in Auto-Focus: The Self-Portrait In Contemporary Art, a publication by British curator and author Susan Bright. She currently lives and works in San Francisco.
